Applications to construct and operate power stations and power lines over a certain capacity are made to Scottish Ministers under sections 36 and 37 of the Electricity Act 1989. Applications should be made directly to the Scottish Goverments's Energy Consents and Deployment Unit or Marine Scotland, Marine Laboratory.

Contact the Energy Consents and Deployment Unit for applications to be considered by Scottish Ministers where they are:

  • in excess of 50 megawatts (MW) for onshore wind farms and power stations that are not wholly or mainly drive by water (such as coal/gas or nuclear plant)
  • in excess of 1 megawatt (MW) for onshore generating stations wholly or mainly drive by water such as hydroelectric
  • overhead power lines and associated infrastructure, as well as large gas and oil pipelines
