Marine Harvest operate a salmon farm in Loch Eishort and Scot Trout Farming (Kames) Ltd operate a rainbow trout farm in Loch Slappin.
Production Cycles
These farms are not currently synchronised, and synchronisation will be difficult to achieve since two different species are farmed which have very different growth cycles. There is currently a proposal to separate this area into two Management Areas, depending on the tidal excursion strength predicted by the hydrographic data measured in the area. At this time, despite the non-synchronised production cycles, there does not appear to be a biological link between the two sites. As in other Management Areas where the farms are operating on different cycles, stringent monitoring of fish health and sea lice infection will continue. If a link is observed in the future, the farms can work together to achieve a degree of synchronisation.
The Marine Harvest salmon farm in Loch Eishort was stocked in early 2006 and harvesting began in spring 2007. Harvesting will continue until the site is cleared and the fallow period is expected to begin by late 2007. The re-stocking plans for this site are currently undecided.
The rainbow trout site in Loch Slappin, operated by Scot Trout Farming (Kames) Ltd., was stocked at the beginning of November 2006. Harvesting commenced in July 2007 and is expected to continue until September 2007. Following a site fallow period, the site is due to be re-stocked in mid November 2007.
