The fish farm companies operating in this area are Pan Fish (Atlantic Salmon) in Loch Portree and Marine Harvest (Atlantic Salmon) in Lochs Sligachan and Ainort. Pan Fish hold the lease for salmon farm operations in the north end of Raasay, but currently there are no active farms in this Management Area.
Production Cycles
The Pan Fish salmon farm in Loch Portree was stocked in January 2007. There are two adjacent cage groups in Loch Portree, and grading operations in October-November 2007 will divide the fish across the two groups. Harvesting is due to commence in May 2008, and site clearance is expected by mid November 2008, whereupon the fallow period will commence.
The Marine Harvest salmon farms in Lochs Sligachan (Sconser site) and Ainort (Cairidh site) operate on a synchronised production cycle, with a single year class stocked at the sites. Site stocking, treatment and harvesting occurs synchronously at these sites, contributing to the successful disease management in this area. The sites were stocked in late 2006, early 2007. Grading and harvesting operations are expected to commence in November-December 2007 and will continue throughout the 18-22 month production cycle. Site clearance, following the final harvest, is expected in autumn 2008. The sites will lie fallow for approximately 8 weeks and site re-stocking is anticipated to occur in late 2008-early 2009.
