The West Loch Tarbert Area Management Agreement was signed in the Spring of 2000, making it the first AMA to be signed in the Western Isles. The area covered by the agreement includes all Crown Estate leases for finfish farming within the water body of West Loch Tarbert between Rubha Huisinis and Aird Nisabost, and all freshwater catchments discharging into this area.
Currently there is one company operating three sites in this area, with important freshwater systems including the Castlewater, Miavaig, Halladale and to the south the Laxdale and luskentyre systems.
There is an SAC designated in this loch for freshwater pearl mussels.
