The Loch Roag AMA was signed in August 2006, this was an important step for all involved. There are 4 fish farming companies operating in the Loch Roag area and 7 major fisheries and several angling clubs that have rivers which flow in to Loch Roag. Of the four companies two are multinational fish farming companies and the other two are much smaller independent organic farmers.

The Fisheries and angling clubs are represented by Outer Hebrides Fisheries Trust (OHFT) and Outer Hebrides Salmon Fisheries Board (OHSFB) during all AMA discussions.

In 2003 the Western Isles Aquaculture Association (WIAA) started work on the Loch Roag Site Optimisation Plan (SOP). The SOP has been fundamental in the fish farms agreeing to sign the AMA. The SOP and the AMA split the Loch into 3 management areas; East, West and a third area that is to have no fish farms located within in it as it is close to the Langavat SAC and acts as a firebreak between East and West loch Roag. The SOP has meant the consolidation of site biomasses to new and existing locations and relinquishment of sites close to the Langavat SAC (Langavat SAC was designated for Atlantic salmon).
