The Firth of Clyde AMA was signed in October 2007, encompassing the Loch Fyne and Kyles of Bute regions. It was amended in 2010 to include the marine waters surrounding the Isle of Arran. The Firth of Clyde AMA contains three seperate production areas - Loch Fyne, Kyles of Bute & St Molios (Arran) and Carradale. Within each production area, fish farming companies aim to synchronously fallow sites for four weeks and individual sites are fallowed for a minimum of six weeks.

The original agreement for Loch Fyne was signed in 2001 and was one of the first AMAs to be signed in Scotland. It was developed in recognition of the devastating declines in salmonid numbers in the principal Loch Fyne rivers through the 1980s.

The AMA consists of the Argyll District Salmon Fisheries Board, Argyll Fisheries Trust, Loch Fyne River Improvement Association, Ruel River Improvement Association, Eachaig District Salmon Fisheries Board, Dunoon and District Angling Club, The Scottish Salmon Company (formerly Lighthouse Caledonia), Otterferry, Lakeland Smolt and Mainstream Scotland. Since 2001, a Loch Fyne River Improvement Association (RIA) and a Ruel RIA have been established and river restoration work commenced. The Scottish Salmon Company have consolidated production in Loch Fyne and the Kyles of Bute, removing sites that presented a problem with sea lice to relieve the pressure on wild fish and become more environmentally sustainable. There are currently eleven marine salmon farms (and one halibut site) and four freshwater salmon units operating within the boundaries of the Firth of Clyde AMA.

Within the Firth of Clyde area the most significant salmonid rivers are the Loch Fyne Rivers (Kinglass, Aray, Shira, Fyne), the Rivers Ruel and Eachaig, and the Leacann and Douglas Waters. On Arran, the Rivers Machrie and Iorsa are significant salmonid rivers. To view river summaries click on the link below.
