Fishery Offices

Marine Scotland Compliance employs 299 staff, in the following areas:

  • Marine Staff - 160
  • Coastal Inspection - 95
  • Headquarters - 44

Although Marine Scotland Compliance owns two surveillance aircraft, the air crews are provided by a private company on a contract basis.

All staff employed directly by the Marine Scotland Compliance are Civil Servants and are subject to Civil Service terms and conditions of employment.

Marine Surveillance

The Marine staff are responsible for crewing the three Marine Protection Vessels, with each Vessel having two crews who operate on the basis of 3 weeks on duty followed by 3 weeks off duty. Further details of the Vessels and their crewing arrangements can be found in the 'Ships' page of this section of the website.

Coastal Inspection

The Coastal Inspection staff, who make up the Sea Fisheries Inspectorate, are located at 18 Fishery Offices around the coast of Scotland, and at the Registration of Buyers and Sellers (RBS) Unit which is based in Aberdeen. The location of our Fishery Offices is provided below:

The 18 Fishery Offices are managed by the 'Head of Coastal Operations' with the assistance of 5 'Business Managers' who manage a subset of the 18 offices. The Head of Coastal Operations is stationed at the Oban Fishery Office.

Below the level of Head of Coastal Operations, staffing grades for the Inspectorate are as follows (although every Office does not have staff in every grade):

Business Manager
Senior Fishery Officer
Fishery Officer
Fishery Assistant
Fish Sampler

Most of the Offices operate on the basis of flexible working, with staff working hours that reflect the patterns of fish landings in their area. However, one Office - Peterhead, operates a shift working pattern, which ensures that enforcement staff are available in these areas 24 hours a day from Sunday evening through to Saturday morning.

Staff between the grades of Business Manager and Fishery Officer can expect to be moved to different Offices during the course of their careers.

Headquarters

Marine Scotland Compliance Headquarters are based in Victoria Quay, Edinburgh.
