Great Crested Newt

In Scotland the Great Crested Newt is found predominantly in Dumfries and Galloway, the Borders, Central Lowlands and around Inverness. Populations in Sutherland result from introductions.

The Great Crested Newt is an amphibian with particular needs. Its requirements include:

  • Pond creation and restoration
  • Retention & management of ponds and riparian habitat
  • Retention of terrestrial habitat - including rough grassland, scrub and woodland
  • Pollution prevention
