Chough Management Options - Guidance for Case Officers

For Chough Options available on Islay, management of land within a 1 km radius of nest sites or roosting sites will give best results. However, if areas outwith this radius provide suitable foraging area for Chough then management under Chough options may be appropriate. Consultation with SNH, RSPB or Scottish Chough Study Group will be helpful in developing the most appropriate management plans.

Detailed information on key areas used by breeding Chough is held by SNH. Applicants and case officers should consult the local SNH office (details below) for further information when developing or scoring an application.

Dune areas are also important for feeding Chough, particularly close to communal roosts. The key areas on Islay are dune systems at Lossit Bay, Kilchoman, Saligo, Sanaigmore, Gruinart, Laggan and small dune areas around The Oa. Dune systems on Colonsay and Oronsay are also important for Chough.

The Rinns of Islay and Oronsay and South Colonsay are designated as Special Protection Areas for a number of bird species, including Chough and Corncrake. Management within these areas for one species may have an impact on the other; if case officers consider there to be possible conflicts they must seek advice from SNH. If there is a conflict, Case Officers should reflect this in their scoring.
