Why do we inspect eggs?
Inspections are carried out by Egg marketing Officers who are part of the Eggs and Poultry Unit (EPU). This unit is responsible for enforcing the EU Egg Marketing Standard Regulations and Hatching Egg and Chick Regulations at all marketing stages (not including retail). Most eggs sold for human consumption in the EU must be sold in accordance with marketing standards legislation.
The role of the unit is to implement the legislation in order to protect consumers.
What do we inspect?
We will look to ensure that all legislative requirements are met. The inspections are unannounced and are chosen on the basis of risk analysis.
An explanatory leaflet on the EU regulations is available.
