SEIAG/03/6 - UPDATE OF SURVEYS RELATING TO SCHOOLS
Purpose
1. The annex to this paper provides a summary of current Scottish Executive data collection activity in relation to schools. It was offered to the Review subgroup in April for comment, and is included here largely for information.
Current surveys
2. The attached Excel spreadsheet (Paper 6A - RouteMap.xls) summarises the current survey activity. 'SurveyList' gives an at-a-glance list of surveys with some basic information and 'Details' provide more details on each exercise. It was recently discussed at the ScotXed board and will be taken forward through SEIAG.
3. The surveys are ordered in relation to their inclusion (possible or actual) in ScotXed.
4. Please note that, following long-running discussion on the Free School Transport survey, it has been decided that, subject to ministerial approval next month, we will cease this collection. You will notice that there are others which are under review. Your views on the usefulness of these collections would be welcomed. Do you use the data? If so what for and what would you do if we did not collect it centrally? How much of a burden is the collection?
5. We have also decided that, as eventually planning for Gaelic medium and Roman Catholic approved teachers will used ScotXed data, and the current survey gives estimates for several years ahead, we will not conduct the Gaelic Medium and Roman Catholic Approved Need Survey from this year.
