Weekly Market Report

Collected weekly from 8 livestock auction markets.

Data published weekly in the Scottish Farmer and provided directly to QMS, SAC, MLC, HM Inspector of Taxes, HIE

Data collected on the number and average prices of store and some breeding cattle and sheep being sold at markets.

Store cattle information available is by breed, sex and weight. Breeding is split into dairy and beef and information is collected on cows & heifers in milk, cows & heifers in calf, cows & heifers with calves at foot, bulling heifers, calves under six weeks old bulls and heifers.

Store sheep information is available by breed, but does not differentiate between sex. Breeding sheep is by breed then ewe lamb, gimmers, fully warranted ewes and broken mouthed ewes.

Scottish Slaughter Survey

Collected from 29 abattoirs on a monthly basis.

This survey is not actually run by this branch but we analysis the data and provide reports to DEFRA and QMS on the data produced.

Information on the number and weights of all animals passing through slaughter houses is collected for clean cattle (steers, heifers and young bulls), cull cattle (cows, bulls and calves), sheep (clean, ewes and rams), pigs (clean pigs, sows and boars).

Poultry Packing Stations Survey

Collected monthly from 5 packing stations.

Report on the data is sent to DEFRA who publish UK figures.

Information is collected on the number, type, weight and price of birds.

Hatchery Survey

Collected from 9 hatcheries on a monthly basis.

Report on the data is sent to DEFRA who publish UK figures.

Information on all types of poultry commercial and breeding number of eggs, chicks placed.

Survey of Ex Farm Milk Prices

Collected form 17 companies purchasing milk on a monthly basis

Report on the data is sent to DEFRA who publish UK figures monthly.

Information on quantity and price of milk bought from farms in Scotland and outside Scotland. Including net price paid to producers, administration costs and bonuses. Also amount and price of unprocessed milk sold on to dairies and milk processors.

Utilisation of Milk by Dairies in Scotland

Collected from 40 companies on a monthly basis and from 40 approx on a quarterly basis.

Quarterly report issued to all respondents and interested parties. Scottish data also included in DEFRA UK publication.

Information on availability liquid milk (whole, semi, skimmed & cream) and disposal of milk (whole, semi, skimmed & cream) as liquid milk, butter, cream, condensed/evaporated, chocolate crumb, milk powders, yoghurt and other products.

Deer Survey

Bi-annual all farmers who have indicated they have farmed deer are surveyed.

Results are sent to Deer

Information on the number of stags and hinds, number of hinds put to the stag and the number of stags and hinds slaughtered.

Labour Survey

Collected from approx 600 holdings over a twelve month period

Average weekly earnings of regular full-time hired workers published in ERSA

Information collected on ordinary and seasonal hours worked, rates of pay, overtime rates, bonuses and benefits.

Rent Survey

Collected from approximately 1,000 holdings yearly

Average rent by type of farm is published in ERSA

Information collected on type of rent agreement, value of rent, area of rented land

Hay and Straw Survey

Collected by phone weekly from 5 hay and straw merchants

Information collected on the price of bales of wheat hay straw and barley hay.

Borrowings Survey

Collected from 13 respondents yearly

Press Notice on Advances to Farming published yearly

Information collected value of advances to farmers, livestock salesmen, agricultural contractors

Soft Fruit Survey

Collected yearly by horticultural staff from holdings they feel represent the industry number of holdings surveyed varies.

Information collected on prices and yields of raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants and tomatoes.

Information collected on variety of fruit and veg.

Combine Crops Production and Disposals Survey , Scotland

The survey covers 350 cereal farms.

Our figures feed into the Agricultural Accounts, ERSA and UK figures. The UK produces the statistics as part of a requirement under Council Regulation 837/90. This requires Member States to supply statistical information on cereals production to the EU, necessary for the performance of the activities of the Community.
