Information on the extent of Gaelic medium education is collected as part of the Scottish Government pupil census in Scotland. Information on Gaelic medium education was first collected in the pupil census in 2005 and this has been continued in each year since.
Results from the Pupil Census carried out in September 2009 show that, in publicly funded schools:
- In 2009, there were 2,638 pupils receiving at least some of the curriculum (other than Gaelic) through Gaelic medium education.
- A further 1,402 were taught Gaelic only through the medium of Gaelic.
- Changes in percentages can be observed for all available categories, in the table below:

- The number of school entries in 2008/2009 for Higher grade Gaelic (learners) was 106. This was an increase of 3 compared to the previous year.
- The number of school entries in 2008/2009 for Higher grade Gaidhlig (not learners) was 83, this was a decrease of 10 compared to the previous year.
