Public Sector Employment

This is a quarterly publication providing data on the level of public sector employment in Scotland. The latest statistics are published each quarter in a National Statistics publication.

There is also a Public Sector Employment websection to accompany the publication. This contains more detailed information on the following areas:

This section contains more detailed information on local government staffing by service group (Education, Social Work, Police, Fire and Other staff). This includes data from the Joint Staffing Watch Survey.

The Scottish Government announced on January 2008 plans to reduce the 199 national devolved public sector organisations by at least 25 per cent by 2011, with the aim of achieving less duplication and bureaucracy.

This section provides employment levels for each of the 199 public bodies operating at the baseline position (of Q3 2007) and monitors how employment has changed each quarter.

Details of the 199 national devolved public bodies are also provided. There are some differences in coverage which means that not all of 199 bodies are included in the National Statistics tables. This is because some bodies fall below the employment threshold for inclusion in the National Statistics tables or are out with National Accounts definitions. More details are provided on the website.

Contains technical information and background notes relevant to the Quarterly Public Sector Employment series.

This provides links to the UK Public Sector Employment Statistical Bulletin (which contains estimates of public sector employment across each government office region) and other related technical papers.

Detailed tables showing a full time series of data - all quarters back to Q1 1999 - are also available to download.

*****

A revisions policy for this publication is published on the Scottish Government website.

Estimates of the costs to respondents of completing the surveys for the Public Sector Employment series are published in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
