Houses in Multiple Occupation
- The HMO return was introduced in order to monitor the mandatory licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation that came into force on 1 October 2001. Included in this return are: applications received, applications refused, applications granted, licences revoked or suspended and licences in force.
- The number of licences in force has increased year on year since the introduction of the mandatory licensing scheme in 2001. The most recent figures for 2010-11 show 13,605 licences in force at 31 March, 15% more than the previous year.
- 21% of the 7,778 applications received in 2010-11 were new applications, and the remainder were applications for licence renewals.
