Health Expenditure
Total expenditure on the NHS in Scotland in 2009/10 was £11.1bn. Of this, £9.7bn was spent by the Area Health Boards that provide hospital and community care. Details of this expenditure can be found in the NHS Cost Book
In 2009/10, 59% of Board expenditure was on hospital care, 16% on community health services and the remaining 25% on family healthcare.
£5.6bn of Board expenditure was spent on hospital care. Of the £2.3bn expenditure on family healthcare 49 per cent (£1.1 billion) was spent on community prescribing costs, 31% was spent on primary medical services (GP practices) and the remainder was on dental and ophthalmic services .
In addition to NHS expenditure, Local Authorities spent £2.1 billion on providing community care in 2009/10.
