Acute Hospital Care

Acute hospitals provide a wide range of specialist care and treatment for patients, for example outpatient consultation, emergency treatment, surgery, diagnostic procedures and close observation and short-term care of patients with worrying health symptoms. Data on acute hospitals exclude obstetric, psychiatric and long stay care services.

It can be seen from the chart below that:

  • Routine inpatient discharges (electives and transfers combined) in acute specialties have increased by 25% over the last 10 years, from 353,512 in 2001/02 to 441,748 in 2010/11
  • Day case discharges have increased by 16.5%, from 383,794 in 2001/02 to 447,191 in 2010/11
  • Non-routine (emergency) inpatient discharges in acute specialties have increased by 10.0% over the last 10 years, from 481,995 in 2001/02 to 529,997 in 2010/11.
