Exclusions

Last updated: July 2011

The overall exclusion rate for looked after children was 365 per 1,000 looked after children, compared with 45 exclusions per 1,000 pupils for all school children.

Please note that exclusion rates are based on the number of exclusions, not the number of children excluded (i.e. a child who is excluded more than once during the school year will be multiple counted).

The exclusion rates were highest for children who were looked after in local authority homes for the entire school year, at 866 exclusions per 1,000 children, and children looked after in voluntary homes, at 697 exclusion per 1,000 children. However, exclusion rates were lowest for children who were looked after in other residential settings (which includes residential schools, secure care accommodation and crisis care), at 152 exclusions per 1,000 children.
