At June 2011 a total workforce of 67,800 was employed on the 52,500 agricultural holdings in Scotland. The workforce consisted of 40,560 occupiers and their spouses and 27,250 employees.

The number of working occupiers on farms decreased by 1.2 cent to 27,500 in 2011. The number of spouses working on the farm fell by 0.5 per cent to 13,050.

The number of employees working regularly on farms decreased by 2.5 per cent to 20,300 with the number of full-time employees decreasing to 13,450 but, part-time employee numbers rose to 6,800. The number of casual and seasonal staff rose by 18 per cent to 6,950.

Hired labour costs decreased by 3 per cent to £341 million in 2010.
