Statistics on VAT Registrations and De-registrations are released annually by the Small Business Service (SBS), an agency of the DTI. They are the best official source on business start-ups and closures and provide detailed information by local authority, region, parliamentary constituency and industrial sector at a UK level. Individual companies cannot be identified in analysis of the IDBR data for disclosure reasons. Some analysts find the "Scottish Business Insider" a useful source of information as it provides employment and turnover data on the top 500 companies in Scotland.
