Getting it right - Becky's story

11 year old girl

The police found 11 year old Becky playing on waste ground during school time. They thought she was simply skipping classes, and took her back to school.

But rather than that being the end of the matter, the police followed the Getting it right approach and filled out a form about Becky's behaviour. They sent this to the school, social work team and the family health visitor.

The health visitor checked her own records about the family, and noticed that Becky's mum had a history of mental health problems, although there was no recent record. Deciding to visit the family, she found that things had got worse again. She arranged a visit from a mental health nurse, and talked with Becky about how she was feeling about her mum getting ill again.

They decided together to ask her aunt to come and stay with them for a while to help out, and to arrange regular home visits to check how the family was getting on.

Getting it right - Jamie's story

ChildSix-year-old Jamie's teacher was worried about his behaviour in class. She had also heard reports of domestic abuse in his family, so she raised her concerns with his mum. They agreed together to contact Women's Aid who helped re-house mother and son. Soon after this, Jamie's behaviour in class settled down.
