Gender

A consideration of the needs, experiences and perspectives of women needs to be integrated into the policy and research process so that we can better understand how to ensure that research captures the differing needs and experiences of Scotland's population and that subsequent policy initiatives work to benefit as many people as possible.

What is clear from available research is the suggestion that women living in rural areas find it more difficult than women in urban areas to access transport, housing, healthcare, education, employment, support and other services. There may be crucial equality issues relevant to, for example, common agriculture policy reform and rural businesses and enterprise that require a gendered perspective. At the very least, any data collected relevant to rural issues should be disaggregated by gender and a consideration of the difficulties faced by rural women addressed when putting together research and policy projects.

• Equal Pay Review for DEFRA (2003) The aim of the audit is to assess whether there is any evidence of pay gap between the genders, ethnic groups or the able bodied and disabled within Defra. Moreover, the intention is to see whether there is any discriminatory practice in terms of remuneration policy or execution.

University of Aberdeen

• Sustainable Maternity Services in Remote and Rural Scotland? A Qualitative Survey of Staff Views on Required Skills, Competencies and Training (2005) This study explores staff views on their roles, skills and training to deliver high quality and local maternity services in remote and rural settings against national recommendations.

East Fife Women's Aid

• Reaching Out: Women's Aid in a Rural Area Final Report (2003) The final report of the Rural Outreach Project, which was designed to increase access to inform ation and services for women and children/young people living in the rural communities of East Fife.
