Under the Gender Equality Duty in Scotland, Scottish Ministers were required to set priorities for the advancement of equality of opportunity between men and women. After a process of consultation and data analysis, Ministers decided in June 2009 that the priorities would be tackling violence against women and occupational segregation.

In April 2011 the gender equality duty was replaced by the equality duty in the Equality Act 2010.
