Introduction
Each year HMICS asks the eight Scottish police forces to complete an Annual Statistical Return (ASR) in which we request information on areas such as staffing. The forces are asked to complete the return based upon their position at the end of the financial year (31 March) so the latest information currently available relates to financial year 2008/09. Please note that there are some subjects where the latest information available relates to previous financial years.
We then collate the information gathered through the individual force returns in an attempt to produce an overview of several key areas within Scottish police forces. Although there are small variations in the information requested from forces from year to year we have data available going back more than 10 years in some subjects.
It should be noted that these are not official statistics and do not cover areas such as police performance or crime detection rates. Instead these subjects are covered within the Scottish Policing Performance Framework ( SPPF) and the second annual report on the SPPF is now available. The Scottish Government also publish reports and statistical bulletins covering police and justice related subjects which can be accessed via their main publications page.
