Approved Medical Practitioner

An Approved Medical Practitioner (AMP) is a medical practitioner who has been approved under section 22 of the 2003 Act by an NHS Board or the State Hospitals Board for Scotland as having special experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder.

Scottish Ministers issued a Direction setting out the qualifications, experience and training requirements for AMPs.

A list of current AMPs is published on the NHS Scotland - Scotland's Health on the Web website.

Training for AMPs is in two parts. The first part takes the form of a day of self directed web based learning which ends with a self administered 12 question test which the psychiatrist must pass.

The second part of the training is a one day workshop based course covering all aspects of the Mental Health Act in great detail. A training booklet will be made available to all psychiatrists on the training day.
