Mental Health Improvement

How we think and feel is central to the way we live our lives.

We want to create a more successful Scotland with a thriving society that offers everyone the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Scottish Government's work on mental health improvement contributes to this. Mental Health Improvement aims to improve good mental wellbeing, reduce the occurrence of mental health problems and mental illness and improve the quality of life of those experiencing mental illness.

We are internationally renowned for our work on mental health improvement and our policy " Towards a Mentally Flourishing Scotland" (2009 - 2011) built on strong foundations established under the National Programme for Mental Health and Wellbeing 2001-2008. The History of Mental Health Improvement In Scotland can be viewed here.

A proposal for a Mental Health Strategy 2011 - 2015 has been out for consultation until 31 January 2012. The consultation is now closed and the Scottish Government is currently analysing responses.  It is the intention of the Scottish Government to publish a final strategy in the Summer of 2012.

Mental Health Improvement is essential if Scotland is to enjoy a healthier future.

The Scottish Government provides funding to a range of delivery agencies working nationally and locally to raise the profile of, and to support further action in, mental health improvement.  This includes the Scottish Recovery Network, Choose Life, See me and Breathing Space. An innovative social marketing campaign aimed at supporting people in Scotland to recognise when they are stressed and to take action to start dealing with it - Steps for Stress - also supports mental health improvement in Scotland.
