Day Care of Children

What the definition can cover

A service which provides any form of care, supervised by a responsible individual, for children on premises other than domestic premises for more than 2 hours during the day and on 6 or more days per year. This does not include children of school age where the service is provided both by and in a school as part of the school's activities.

Examples

  • nursery classes;
  • crèches;
  • after school clubs (not run by the school); and
  • playgroups.

Commencement status

Phased commencement:

  • To age 8 years - commenced 1 April 2002
  • Age 9 to 16 years - commenced 1 October 2002
