National Care Standards - A Brief History
Scottish Ministers developed the National Care Standards to ensure everyone in Scotland receives the same high quality of care no matter where they live.
The Standards explain what you can expect from any care service you use, written from the point of view of the person using the service. They also help you raise concerns or complaints. There are 6 main principles behind the Standards:
- Dignity
- Privacy
- Choice
- Safety
- Realising Potential
- Equality and Diversity
As of April 2011 The Care Commission who used the National Care Standards to regulate care services ceased to exist. It was replace by Social Care and Social Work Services Scotland who Regulate 18 out of the 23 National Care Standards that were under the Care Commission's remit. The other 5 standards are now regulated by Health Improvement Scotland. (HIS) These standards are all for independent healthcare services.
