Appraisal Leads Group (ALG)

The Appraisal Leads Group (ALG) is a workstream that has emanated from the Scottish Government Health Directorates (SGHD) Cross Professional Fitness to Practise Group which is part of the governance arrangements for implementation in Scotland of the UK White Paper Trust, Assurance and Safety - The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century (published February 2007). The ALG focuses on appraisal for doctors.

The ALG is co-chaired by Gordon Birnie, Medical Director, NHS Fife and Mr Ian Finlay, Senior Medical Officer (Medical Revalidation) at Scottish Government. The ALG is responsible for ensuring delivery of high quality appraisal for doctors for the purposes of revalidation, across the whole of Scotland and for all types of doctor.

The current focus around appraisal is on training appraisers, quality assurance of appraisal, and defining standardised policies and procedures for appraisal across NHS Scotland.
