A new knowledge service has been launched by NHS Education for Scotland to support healthcare staff, partners in all sectors, patients and the public, in addressing inequalities and putting into practice the principles of Patient Focus and Public Involvement.

Together the three elements form a knowledge management package which will equip and empower staff, patients and public with the knowledge they need to contribute actively to quality of care, influencing priorities and planning services.

  1. Specialist e-Library for Equality in Care accessed via the NHS Scotland e-Library ( www.elib.scot.nhs.uk) provides a unique evidence and knowledge base that covers potential sources of inequalities such as age, disability, ethnicity, faith and belief, gender, geography, homelessness, poverty and deprivation, sexual orientation. The Specialist e-Library will keep you up to date with developments and initiatives in all these areas.
  2. The NHS GetInvolved website ( www.nhsgetinvolved.com )

    This is a new service offering information and tools to help individuals, groups and communities to get involved in improving their own health and healthcare, in influencing NHS priorities and contributing to the way services are planned.

  3. Shared Space

Is an unique collaborative workspace which supports the sharing of knowledge within and across communities such as healthcare staff, patients and the public. It enables these communities to request that their information is evaluated and published to the e-Library for all users to access.

The Shared Space aims to reduce isolation, prevent duplication of effort, widen access to all kinds of resources produced locally, and to improve standards across the service by facilitating sharing of best practice and experience.

Together, the three elements of this knowledge management package aim to equip and empower staff, patients and public with the knowledge they need to contribute actively to quality of care, influencing priorities and planning services.
