The Vale of Leven Hospital Inquiry

The Vale of Leven Hospital Inquiry was set up by Scottish Ministers to investigate the occurrence of Clostridium difficile infection and associated deaths which occurred within the Vale of Leven Hospital between 1 December 2007 and 1 June 2008. The Inquiry is independent and any questions regarding it should be directed straight to the Inquiry Team.

HAI Targets

There are two national targets associated with healthcare associated infections.

  • To reduce all Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (including MRSA) cases by 30% by 31 March 2010 and to achieve a further 15% reduction by 31 March 2011.
  • To reduce the rate of Clostridium difficile infections in patients aged 65 and over by at least 50% by 31 March 2011.

The Scottish Government works closely with the NHS to ensure that the risks of healthcare associated infections are kept to a minimum. The key ways in which this is achieved is through:

The Healthcare Associated Infection Task Force

The HAI Task Force is responsible for advising Scottish Government on policy development to tackle healthcare associated infections.

Healthcare Associated Infection Delivery Plans

The HAI Taskforce Delivery Plans capture the detail of the action being taken by Scottish Government, NHS Boards and key stakeholder agencies to reduce healthcare associated infections. The current programme of work is running from April 2008 to March 2011.

HAI Funding and Budgets

The Scottish Government is providing over £50 million of additional funding between 2008 and 2011 to NHS Boards and key national stakeholder agencies to tackle healthcare associated infections.
