CIVIL SERVICE CODE (SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE VERSION)

The Civil Service Code sets out the core values of the Civil Service and the standards expected of civil servants.

Constitutionally, civil servants are servants of the Crown. The Crown's executive powers are exercised by the UK Government on reserved matters and by Scottish Ministers on devolved matters in Scotland. Civil servants in the Scottish Executive, its Agencies and Associated Departments are accountable to Scottish Ministers who in turn are accountable to the Scottish Parliament.

Sir Gus O'Donnell, the Head of the Home Civil Service and Janet Paraskeva, the First Civil Service Commissioner launched a new Civil Service Code, including for the first time a Scottish Executive version, on 6 June 2006. The new Code is the result of the responses received to a consultation exercise on a draft new Code held earlier that year.

Information about the new Code, and the consultation exercise, is available at www.civilservice.gov.uk/civilservicecode. The Scottish Executive version of the new Code is available as a Word Doc or PDF
