Low Carbon Vehicles

Scottish Government Policy

The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 sets a world-leading level of ambition. The Act sets in statute the Government Economic Strategy target of 80% cuts in emissions by 2050 and an interim reduction target for 2020 of 42%.

Factors to be considered in creating Sustainable Specifications/Targets

The Scottish Government published its associated Climate Change Delivery Plan on 17 June 2009. The Delivery Plan identifies a requirement to decarbonise road transport by 2050, with significant progress made by 2030. On 29 June 2009, the Scottish Government also launched its three-month consultation on how to achieve the widespread adoption of low carbon vehicles (LCVs) envisaged in the Delivery Plan, and what, if any, targets for their uptake would be appropriate. The responses to the consultation are informing the development of a policy statement with associated actions which can be delivered in partnership by the public and private sectors.

The EU Energy Services Directive and the Cleaner and Efficient Vehicles Directive, which will come into force in 2012, are also relevant.
