Household Waste
In context
A Zero Waste Plan is being developed which outlines how we can all play a part to reduce, reuse and recycle resources to help make Scotland a zero waste society. This plan replaces the Household Waste Prevention Action Plan which aimed to halt growth of household waste by 2010. An update on the Actions within this plan was published in July 2009.
Everyone needs to be involved. Homes and schools need to think about what they buy, what they use and what they throw away and we all need to participate fully in our local recycling collection and reuse schemes.
The Scottish Government is interested to hear your comments, ideas and opinions on the Zero Waste Plan. To participate in the Zero Waste Plan consultation please complete the Zero Waste Plan Household Leaflet by November 13, 2009.
Household Support Programmes
Funding is being provided to the Waste Awareness Scotland to provide a national recycling campaign. The campaign is aimed at raising the awareness of, and changing attitudes and behaviour to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Waste Aware Scotland's Sort-It tool can also advise you on where your nearest recycling facilities are and how to reduce, reuse and recycle.
The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) is also being funded to do work on waste prevention. This includes home composting, and work with retailers to reduce packaging and food waste. In particular, WRAP have launched an Innovation Fund to encourage innovative design of supermarkets' products and packaging to minimise waste.
