Non-municipal waste accounts for around 75 per cent of Scotland's waste. As landfill tax increases, so does the need for business to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste.

Scottish Government approach

A Zero Waste Plan is being developed which outlines how we can all play a part to reduce, reuse and recycle resources to help make Scotland a zero waste society. This plan replaces the Business Waste Framework for Scotland and its associated Action Plan.

The UK Packaging Strategy which extends to Scotland, outlines how the Scottish Government will help reduce unnecessary packaging and recycle more of it.

We are interested to hear your comments, ideas and opinions on Scotland's Zero Waste Plan and UK Packaging Strategy. The closing date for the consulations is November 13, 2009.

Support for Scottish Businesses

The Scottish Government support services such as Envirowise and the Business Environment Partnership to help companies reduce their waste, in partnership with representatives from business and local authorities.

The Scottish Government also supports the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP). NISP identifies opportunities for the waste products of one business to be used by another to create a new product, diverting material from landfill on a continuing basis. In 2008-09, NISP identified 38 synergies which resulted in diverting 73,743 tonnes from landfill and £635,174 in economic savings.

Support for Local Authorities and Waste Industry

Remade Scotland is a market development programme assisting the waste industry and local authorities. Remade Scotland provides support to local authorities to assist them evaluate and optimise their recycling schemes in order to achieve the 40 per cent recycling rate for 2010. Remade Scotland has also published a number of reports relating to market analysis, materials, kerbside collections.
