Language Learning: 1+2 Model

The Scottish Government's key commitment to language learning is to "introduce a norm for language learning based on the european Union 1 + 2 model - that is we will create the conditions in which every child will learn two languages in addition to their own mother tongue. This will be rolled out over two Parliaments and will create a new model of language acquisition in Scotland".

Improving language learning is a key priority for Curriculum for Excellence. Through changes in learning and teaching and support for leadership, Curriculum for Excellence will bring new and exciting opportunities to make languages education stimulating and exciting for all pupils.

The Languages Commitment aims to develop the teaching of languages within Curriculum for Excellence, improve learners engagement with and achievement in languages, and also to develop public understanding and awareness of languages both in term of the big issues we face and as a career option.

A Languages Working Group, chaired by Simon Macaulay, has been set up to consider strategic implications for longer term delivery of the commitment and will report to Ministers in early 2012.
