Arts and Crafts - flying the flag

Activities can help inspire you to create fantastic artwork and displays. For a whole class activity why don't you get the pupils to design a flag to represent their school and local area. They can start by thinking about what they are proud of or really like about the school. Whether it is sports, music, debating, teachers, school building, playing fields, work they have done to make the school more environmentally friendly. Whatever really springs to mind.

This activity is designed for all pupils, regardless of their artistic abilities and can be carried out as a short stand alone task or used alongside the other activities in this pack.

How it works?

  • As a class or smaller groups look at some real flags and discuss what are the features of a flag they like, eg colours, shapes, images.
  • Split the class into groups of 5 or 6. They can write up a short design brief of what they want their flag to look like and what shape it could be. They can write a list of the things they think are good about their school.
  • Provide them with a range of colourful magazines and other arts and crafts resources.
  • Using the art resources get them to design a flag which best represents the school. Encourage them to think about why they have chosen certain pictures, colours and designs as they go along.
  • Get each group to describe their flags to the others in the class.
  • Display the flags in the classroom or corridors of the school.
