General Introduction to Project
Bathgate Early Years Centre offers integrated provision for under-fives and their parents. Social Policy and Sure Start facilities have been accommodated, with a dedicated playroom for 16 children. This supplements the nursery with placement for 40 children and adjacent 24 child 'wraparound' care playroom. A separate Health Visitors' Room provides the space for Health Visitors and other health professionals to work within the centre. The building opened for the new term on 23 August 2006.
A key feature of this case study was the selection of durable materials to minimise the effects of graffiti and vandalism, which had been a problem in the area. The council was concerned that the building should be as durable and 'vandal proof' as possible, without compromising the design or the appearance of the building. This approach has been successful and the building, although simple, is sensitively executed and provides a pleasant and secure environment both inside and out for both children and staff. The council's maintenance team was consulted on issues relating to durability and life cycle of materials, and this added value to the final result.
In addition to nursery classes within schools. West Lothian is now pursuing a new policy of integrated 'Early Years Centres', as co-located nursery and early years provision within stand-alone accommodation. This has resulted in the amalgamation of these classes into bespoke facilities.
