General Introduction to Project
Strathesk Primary School is a two stream school with 14 class bases located in an urban setting on the edge of Penicuik. The school is one of eight new primaries procured by Midlothian Council as part of their Schools PPP project. The new school brings together pupils and staff from two former local primaries, Ladywood and Eastfield. Strathesk also includes a nursery with a 60/60 capacity.
The integration of the nursery allows for progressive development and enhanced parental and community involvement, whilst a community wing within the building offers the opportunity to build on an already strong community ethos.
Strathesk Primary offers a modern DDA compliant environment ensuring the integration of pupils with additional support needs, this includes provision for pupils with mobility problems and intimate care needs. It offers greatly improved resources in the areas of ICT, PE, music, drama, art, and hosts a dedicated learning resource centre.
The project has been included as a case study as a good example of a two stream school built in an urban setting. The school also offers an interesting comparison to Moorfoot Primary, one of the other schools in Midlothian's schools' project, also featured as a case study.
