General Introduction to Project
Keppoch is an innovative campus including two primary schools, Saracen Primary (built to replace Hawthorn and Saracen Primary Schools), and a relocated St Teresa's Primary School (denominational). The campus also incorporates Broomlea School in the Additional Support for Learning and Keppoch Nursery School and Stepping Stones for Children for pre 5s.
The campus was built as part of Phase 1 of Glasgow City Council's Pre-12 Strategy. This was the pilot phase of a strategy driven by key principles established following a best value review of primary education in Glasgow; "Raising Standards for the Learning Age - Creating Tomorrow's Glasgow".
The new campus opened to pupils in August 2004 and offers modern, state of the art accommodation including a library/media suite, conference room, GP rooms, gymnasium with showers and changing facilities and a dining/assembly hall which boasts a lighting and sound booth. The campus also benefits from a synthetic, floodlit football pitch. The nursery children enjoy a bright outdoor area filled with exciting outdoor play equipment, and the Broomlea pupils are delighted with their hydrotherapy pool and rubber surfaced central play area.
The campus was designed to allow all children to interact with each other and whilst Broomlea School was specifically designed to accommodate the needs of pupils with complex learning difficulties, the lift and doorways within the campus are specially adapted to allow pupils to work and play beside the pupils in Saracen and St Teresa's Primary Schools.
The campus is used extensively by the local and wider community and has hosted several prestigious national conferences and exhibitions.
The project is included as a case study as a flagship campus, known nationally as an excellent example of successful co-location.
