General Introduction to Project
Deanburn Primary School was first built in the early seventies and phased over two stages, with the infant building that remains today being the latter stage. In 2002 the earlier phase which housed the main school was damaged beyond repair by fire and soon after was demolished to make way for a replacement primary school for Bo'ness.
Deanburn is a non-denominational primary school with a nursery and enhanced provision. The school is set in a semi-rural area within a mixed development of private and public housing, and is part of the Bo'ness cluster of schools comprising one secondary school and five primary schools. Deanburn is also part of the Bo'ness Integrated Learning Community.
The building is included as a case study because it has become an icon for Falkirk Council's design approach to protecting the environment by using sustainable methods and construction materials. This is achieved without compromising the design intent, and the project demonstrates that sustainability need not cost more than a non-sustainable approach. The school also has a wind turbine which will potentially supply a significant amount of energy towards meeting the school's electrical load.
