General Introduction to Project
The project comprises a small but delightful extension to Gullane Primary School in East Lothian. Accommodation provided includes a new classroom extension of 60sqm, with an entrance lobby/cloaks area, accessible toilet/changing room and an integral playground shelter. The project was designed by East Lothian Council Architects Department and is one of a number of similar projects built in recent years. East Lothian is one of the few council areas in Scotland where the population is increasing at a significant rate - Gullane is therefore representative of a number of schools in the same area.
Key features of this project are the attention to detail and the integration of sustainable, healthy materials as standard. Although modest in scale, this project is well designed and beautifully executed. By adopting a truly integrated approach, this extension proves that many of the key desirable features associated with adopting a sustainable approach (e.g. a low energy design, well daylit and naturally ventilated, and using healthy materials) can be achieved within 'normal' budget constraints. It also dispels the myth that design is compromised in sustainable buildings.
