General Introduction to Project

East Ayrshire Council's aim was to bring together on one campus the previous nursery and Galston primary school buildings which had been located on 3 sites. The project was initiated in 1997 but had a lengthy gestation period, incorporating a rigorous option appraisal exercise and a complex planning approval process to resolve flood prevention issues.
One of the Council's key objectives was to incorporate ambitious eco-friendly features to help improve the school's sustainability rating. The Council secured grant funding to assist with the cost of incorporating some of these sustainable elements.
The project has been selected as a case study because it incorporates a significant number of alternative energy and "green" technologies. The building is considered to be a leading example of a "green school" and includes a wind turbine, photovoltaic cells, a ground source heat pump and grey water recycling. The school building has been rated as B+ using the SBEM energy calculation tool.
