Bunessan Primary School

General Introduction to Project Bunessan

The project featured a new extension to an existing primary school which had been extended several times since the original school house was constructed in the 1870s. The aim of the new extension was to provide a custom built Pre-5 unit to enable the pre-5 pupils to relocate from a local village hall. Provision of a new staffroom, and refurbishment of the existing toilets and flat roof areas, was also undertaken.

This project was chosen as a case study to illustrate the extension to the school as a contemporary reinterpretation of the original Victorian building. It was also chosen as a good example of the provision of community facilities. To make the materials more easily transportable, a lightweight approach was used, as opposed to the heavy masonry of the original. In addition, the choice of timber kit construction allowed for offsite pre-fabrication during inclement weather.
