Pathfinder projects

Phase 1 pathfinders

Phase 2 pathfinders

Phase 1 pathfinders

As part of the Scottish Executive's aim to develop good practice in adult literacies provision, four pathfinder projects were established in 2002 to support innovative approaches to literacies learning.

A final report on the projects was published in October 2006.

The following individual reports were produced for the Road Haulage and Distribution Training Council.

Phase 2 pathfinders

In April 2003, Learning Connections launched its Adult Literacies Challenge Fund for the second phase of pathfinder projects. These projects were completed in March 2006, and a pathfinder dissemination conference was held to consider the lessons learned.

The phase 2 projects were as follows:

Farm Plus

This pathfinder developed literacies learning using internet technology. It focused on rural learners, particularly farmers, in Dumfries and Galloway and had a regeneration and digital inclusion focus. More details

Challenge Dad

The Challenge Dad Pathfinder was based in Aberdeen and looked at encouraging male family members to participate in literacies learning for their own and their families' benefit. More details

Literacies curriculum for adults with learning disabilities

The focus was on curriculum development and training in adult literacies for adults with learning disabilities. It sought to enable people with learning disabilities to develop the skills they need to participate and contribute actively in communities. More details

The Welcoming

The Welcoming was based in the adult learning project in Edinburgh and focused on literacies learning for speakers of other languages, particularly asylum seekers and refugees. More details

Links to literacies

This pathfinder, based in Learning Link Scotland, aimed to strengthen effective voluntary sector representation and participation in adult literacies action plan partnerships. More details

Countdown East End

Countdown East End, based in Glasgow, involved family literacies learning using a community development approach, developing a programme for recruiting and supporting peer educators. More details

Literacy and health - Grampian Health Board

This pathfinder recognised the link between low literacy levels and poor health and aimed to build the capacity of the health sector in identifying and responding to the needs of people with low literacy levels. More details

Homing in on Literacy

Homing in on Literacy focused on the literacies skills necessary to sustain tenancies, using a social practices model, particularly with young people. The Pathfinder worked with homeless people in Perth and Kinross who were aiming to, or had taken up, their own tenancies. More details

Phase 2 pathfinder toolkit

Learning Connections worked with the eight phase 2 pathfinder Projects, supported by ODS Consultants, to develop an evaluation framework and a "toolkit" to help them check the effectiveness and impact of their projects. The toolkit contains the following:

• Baseline Data Proforma

• Project Action Plan

• Quarterly Progress Report Proforma

• Annual Progress Report Proforma

• Final Report Proforma

• Case Study Guidance

• User Satisfaction Interview Schedule

• Partner Consultation Interview Schedule

The toolkit can also be used by a range of literacies projects, not just the pathfinders.
