Homing in on Literacy

Area

Perth and Kinross.

Target Client Group

People who are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, and living in temporary accommodation and hostels in Perth.

Aims

To increase the literacies levels of homeless people so that they can deal with matters relating to their tenancies, with the result that tenancies become more sustainable.

Activities

The project will work with learners on literacies in relation to tenancy issues such as form filling, budgeting, understanding bills and meters, accessing the benefits system and communicating with agencies.

Resources and materials will be developed for learners around the issue of sustainable tenancies. There will also be work with agencies such as housing and health to evaluate their forms and written information and, where applicable, work with them to make these more user friendly. The project will work with agencies to develop literacies awareness among staff.

Learners will also be able to access health care resources and information on healthier lifestyles through discussions at the beginning and end of their involvement with the project.

Intended Pathfinder Legacy

The project will provide a model of good practice for engaging with, and providing, literacies skills based around the issue of sustainable tenancies. This model and the learning materials developed could be copied for use throughout Scotland. Training will be developed for staff of other agencies to allow them to continue to deliver learning after the project ends. As a result of working with the project, agencies that support homeless people will have developed more user friendly and accessible information and resources.
