And the next step?

What is the next step you need to take?

The following comments were made in the plenary session in response to the final question "and the next steps?".

  • We have capacity issues so we have to look creatively at how we can address this but additional funding would be a help. - Literacies partnership.
  • Speak to like minded people; with a view of raising the profile of the issue.
  • Given room and funding for growth and expansion. Being able to pass on valued tutoring skills to support workers put into place in their home, then taking learning further.
  • Persuade people that developing independence through literacies learning should be accessible to all challenged by literacy.
  • NB the approach is the same as the "Care Aims Approach" used by therapists in NHS [an example of the layout is given at the end of this Annex].
  • Repeat the first step again in 6 months if there are no takers. If there are takers start to look at coordination - who needs to/ should be involved - time/ resources and release staff for reviews if necessary.
  • Funding - you tie into QIS Qualification visits to all health boards (QI's 2+3) on LD/services - includes wider sector of GP's, support, comm support and health promotion like easy read and access to health leaflets and complaints etc. need literacies to access. Also say is LD and or ASD (autism).
  • Take action.
  • Develop partnership working between community education department and residential support services. Review this on an ongoing basis.
  • Arrange to present this way of working to colleagues in Literacies Partnership care sector and show DVD of research findings.
  • Continued training plan for new staff - this could be a mandatory training alongside others which are essential for the work we do. Involvement (and possible training) for primary carers would allow a more person centred approach to the literacy training to our client group. Also involvement of other day service providers may be involved.
  • I think more publicity is needed nationally to make the public more aware of the good work being done by the different literacy organisations
  • Continued training and support for staff and more conferences like this to spread the word.
  • Co-ordinator feedback - evaluate the process and review for future development.
  • Meet with organisations - sell the idea
  • Train staff ( literacies and care workers in this approach)
  • Develop plan of action
  • Links with other agencies, partners and literacies providers throughout Scotland.
  • Hopefully move forward at a strategic level otherwise everything is too fragile - we have the willingness, enthusiasm and expertise but not the political nous. We know it works/ evidence
  • Consider staff training ALN and social care joint?
  • Identify a centre/ group to work with on a pilot
  • Action plan
  • Useful to hear feedback, coordinators/ trainers working on the ground. Working with two groups. Reviewed.
  • Hope that it is taken on board by all in my specific area or at least considered and the possibility acted on.
  • Get 'buy in' from learners, carers, parents, workers - more holistic approach.
  • Contact agencies and/or parent/ carers
  • Look at developing strategic priorities and actions which are agreed and implemented by partners
  • Take the plan to management and seek ideas/ opinions of project staff probably through a development day
  • In the case of our organisation seek the views of service users
  • Write the plan and set targets to implement it
  • Provide training as necessary
  • Get Started.
  • Plan, monitor, evaluate.
  • Go back and open up the debate and start to look for a solution to what we recognise as a growing issue.
  • Use relevant resources used today. Information gather. Network. Email facilitators of today's event. Lead up on case studies etc.
