West Fife Enterprise

West Fife Enterprise is a local initiative providing training and employment opportunities for residents in the former mining villages in the West Fife area. This project has won many training awards, including the first NGO/voluntary sector body to receive a national (UK) training award.
The refurbishment and extension of the training facilities included an award of over £359,000 of ERDF funding from the East of Scotland programme. In addition to that funding, West Fife Enterprises receive Objective 3 funding for their ESF projects.
Queen's Biomedical Research Institute
The University of Edinburgh's project to create the to create the Queen's Biomedical Research Institute, was awarded over £5.5 million ERDF funding from the East of Scotland programme.
The building has the capacity to house 600 researchers, covering three significant areas of research over three floors; inflammation research, cardiovascular biology and reproductive biology. The staff will be working on innovative approaches to diagnosis and treatment through developing a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying common diseases.
A formal opening is planned for August 2006.
