The food and drink key sector comprises agriculture, sea fishing, aquaculture and food and drink manufacturing.

The Turnover (or Sales) in the key sector increased by 6% between 2008 and 2009 from £11.2 billion to £11.9 billion, an increase of over £700 million. This increase is at a lower rate than the previous year, but moves the key sector closer to the Scotland Food and Drink target of £12.5 billion by 2017.
Food and drink manufacturing, which is part of the key sector, has broken the £9 billion turnover mark for the first time, increasing by 8% between 2008 and 2009 from £8.3 billion to £9.02 billion.
The turnover in drinks manufacturing increased by 11% from £3.9 billion in 2008 to £4.35 billion in 2009. In food manufacturing, turnover increased from £4.4 billion to £4.67 billion.
Gross Value Added in the key sector increased by £381 million (9%) between 2008 and 2009 and now stands at £4.8 billion.
Gross Value Added in food and drink manufacturing increased by 16% between 2008 and 2009. GVA in food and drink manufacturing is nearly £4 billion.
