National Food Discussion - The Issues

shopping basketThe Scottish Government's aim is to have a future food industry that is fully joined-up throughout the whole supply chain, and that plays an integral part in a healthier, wealthier and fairer, safer and stronger, greener and smarter Scotland.

The discussion paper Choosing the Right Ingredients - The Future of Food for Scotland sets out some of the key issues we face such as how we square a successful industry and satisfied consumers with a healthy natural environment; how we guarantee the safety and quality of our food; how we keep it wholesome and health-giving yet affordable, and how we position Scottish food to best advantage in the global marketplace, maximising returns back to Scotland.

We have our own ideas about how we might get there, as do many of the other people we have talked to. Suggestions have included:

  • Investing in schemes so people know where food comes from
  • Innovating and developing more low-fat, low-salt and low-sugar foods
  • Promoting and selling more affordable and healthier foods
  • Teaching young children to cook and helping them learn about taste and nutrition at a young age
  • Make more positive choices about the food we eat

Food is essential and is everyone's business. Since we all have a stake in the future of food for Scotland, we want to encourage everyone to have their say.
